REFERENCE LAYER OBSERVATORY MODEL v0.1

REFERENCE

OBSERVATORY

Who shapes the world an AI sees?

AI systems do not encounter the world directly.

They encounter sources, rankings, citations,

summaries, indexes, and other representations.

This observatory examines the layer before the answer.

A model can function correctly

while the world presented to it is distorted.

01

The problem

The Problem

Traditional influence measurement asks:

How many people saw this?

The Reference Layer asks:

How likely is a machine to encounter it?

Human reach and machine reach are not the same.

Multiplicity is not independence.

Unresolved Sources

A listed source count is not an independent origin count.

The observatory records which stage a number comes from, so later precision does not overwrite an earlier wave.

Next

What comes next

Observe the world first. Model comparison is last.

  1. 01

    T0 — Listed world

Freeze query, listed URLs, hosts, provenance, and present UNKNOWN states. This is not retrieval and not a determination of truth.

  2. 02

    T1 — Retrieved world

Whether it was retrieved, and what was there: timestamp, HTTP status, final URL, title, domain, published date if observable, canonical URL, fingerprint, provenance. Not how pages are related.

  3. 03

    T2 — Resolved world

CITES / COPIES / DERIVES_FROM. How pages connect is interpreted here. A later resolved count does not mean the T0 host-based estimate was wrong.

  4. 04

    T2+ — Re-observed world over time

Recapture the same information environment later. Reference Afterlife begins here, not with model comparison.

  5. 05

    T3 — Model-visible world

Last. Answer appearance across models remains UNKNOWN until the world itself has been observed.
